WOWK TV BIOGRAPHY:
Spencer Adkins is the longest serving on-air personality on WOWK TV.
He joined the station in March of 1993, after driving a U-Haul through the remnants of the "Storm of the Century." Perhaps that was a sign from Mother Nature.
Spencer graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Communications from Oakland University which is located north of Detroit. His first TV job was in 1989 at WBKB TV in Alpena, Michigan which was the smallest TV market (and station) in the nation at the time. where he reported, anchored and produced all news, weather and sports on weekends.
Stops in Clarksburg in 1989 and Martinsburg in 1991 as reporter/producer/co-anchor for evening newscasts allowed Spencer to grow on the news side of broadcasting and even have an early taste of news management. In 1992, Spencer took a position as weekend weather anchor and weekday news reporter at WHOI TV in Peoria, Illinois. Six months later, West Virginia would come calling again.
In March 1993, Spencer joined WOWK as a night side reporter in Charleston which turned into a morning weather assignment in Huntington which turned into anchoring the morning news along with running the morning assignment desk in Charleston. Later, Spencer was on the road with his own segment on the evening news called "Spencer's Neighborhood Spotlight," which allowed Spencer to showcase people as well as anything and everything they like to do for fun. Here's a sample!
In 1997 Spencer was asked to take over for departing Chief Meteorologist Dave Parker. Spencer accepted, went back to school for meteorology earning the Broadcast Meteorologist Certificate from Mississippi State Geosciences Department, studied more and eventually earned the prestigious Certified Broadcast Meteorologist seal from the American Meteorological Society while also holding the National Weather Association Seal of Approval.
When he's not talking about, thinking about or messing around with something that has to do with weather, Spencer is most likely spending time with his family or is out running or in the gym lifting weights. That's when he's not on social media or announcing at a local race track or covering or announcing at a local marching band competition or talking to someone about drum corps.
Over the years he has been an avid supporter of the Marine Corps Toys for Tots drive in the area. Spencer grew up in Michigan where he met his wife, and they eventually landed in Huntington, West Virginia, which was the home of his grandparents.
He currently lives in Cabell County with his wife where they raised four boys. Now the house is permanent residence of the happy couple, their youngest son and three dogs. Spencer says he has been very lucky to work with several other outstanding meteorologists in his department over the years. Together they have won numerous awards for Best Weathercast or Best Weather Operation from various organizations.
If you see Spencer out and about don't be afraid to come up and chat about the weather. Or band. Or band and weather. His favorite things to talk about!
